James Lally has spent more than two decades leading organizations where the consequences of poor leadership were immediate and measurable, and then doing it again in corporate and consulting environments where the stakes were different but the fundamentals were the same.

Jim began his career as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army, leading a platoon of 40 paratroopers through three combat deployments to Iraq with the Army's 82d Airborne Division. He later commanded a company of intelligence soldiers operating across nine locations in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands; and led that same unit through an eight-month deployment to Iraq.
His final active duty assignment placed him in an evaluator and advisor role for large-scale military exercises; assessing command decisions, diagnosing organizational friction, and helping senior leaders solve problems under pressure. It was, in practice, management consulting before he called it that.
After leaving active duty, Jim joined State Street Corporation in Boston, managing daily operations for a team responsible for NAV reporting on more than $80 billion in assets across 53 mutual funds. He then moved to Deloitte, where he spent seven years as a Strategy & Operations consultant advising executives in defense, financial services, insurance, healthcare, and media on operational transformation, organizational design, and execution.
Throughout that period — while working full time at Deloitte — Jim continued to serve as a senior Army Reserve officer, mobilized twice to lead organizations at scale. He served as Deputy Commander and Chief of Staff of an intelligence brigade of nearly 2,000 Soldiers and civilians operating at 16 locations across Afghanistan, and later as director of an 80-person reach-back intelligence analysis organization supporting U.S. Central Command. He subsequently commanded a battalion of 250 Soldiers while continuing his full consulting workload. He currently holds the rank of Colonel.
